Examination is near!!!

Our phase test 1 is on this Saturday. Even though it states there ''test'' but for me and maybe for all of us, it feels like examination. First subject is on Electrical Technology. Haven't study it. I hope I can score for this test. I didn't use much of my time for revising. I've been busy lately.
Back to reality, where are our allowances? I mean for new intake. We have so much important things to buy such as laptop for our work, stationaries for Engineering Drawing, broadband for research, recharge cards for the broadband. I hope our allowances come out around this week. I don't know how to check my allowances cause I don't even have a bank account but I already applied it at MKJB a few months ago. Unfortunately, no reply. Sorry if my post this time is not very pleasing, I've been busy lately.

Fire Marshall

Last two weeks, SR and ASR from each departments' groups were sent to Kuala Belait fire station to attend a Fire Marshall course including me. It is a 3 days course.

The first day, the firemen talked about the motto, vision, mission and objectives of the course. They also talked about the how to connect with them in case of emergency situation, how to use a fire extinguisher and etc.

We also encounter a snake caught at Kuala Balai on the first day. They said it is the biggest catch they ever caught.
On the second day, we did every theory we learnt on the first day such as the correct way to carry the hose and roll it. Kawad Hydrant 1.

On the third day, we had our exam for 15 minutes. After that , we just had fun!

My Classroom

So we have moved and use the new building since last week. It has lockers on the second floor. I hope I can use it. I'm tired carrying my stuff all over MKJB. It is nice and big but the problem is we can't use the air conditioners for the time being. We have two of them in our classroom. So basically we have to open our classroom's windows in the morning. Plus, there is no projector in the class. Or every room. The teachers have to bring their own portable projector to the class or theatre.
Our allowance. I hope to receive it before school holidays. I have a lot of things to buy such as notebooks, files, new clothes, a laptop (I'm using my mum's laptop for now) and most certainly a broadband. That is a must. I have a hard time to connect to the internet. Most of my assignments require internet connection.

Appointed as Group B SR

The new building will be fully use on this Monday? So exciting. Except there’s no internet connection yet and our classroom is very warm cause the air-conditioners are not available for this moment. As long as we are available to use the new building before we graduate, it’s fine to me.

I was appointed as a SR for my group. Honestly, I don’t even know what SR means. But what I know  about it is, it is full of responsibilities. A SR must be really hardworking, commitment, confident and blablabla. I’m not sure why they voted me. I’m not like that. I don’t like holding big responsibilities but come to think of it, this thing is important for me cause one day I’ll face bigger responsibilities such as a my future career, my love life and my family. This position as a SR is an opportunity for me to train myself as a leader. So thanks group B for voting me. You guys are doing me a big favor.

So this week, we were very busy. Moving our instructors’ stuffs to their new staffroom. What a tiring week. 3 storey building. Imagine climbing up the stairs to the top of the building. Well, what to do since the elevators are only for the instructor. Thanks again MKJB for providing us a better and more comfortable place for our studies.
All of these things are moved to the instructors' new staff room. Here.

First of all, I want to give thanks to MKJB admins for providing coveralls and safety boots to most of the juniors including me. We have been waiting for it. For those who haven’t receive their coveralls and safety boots, just be patient. I’m sure it’ll be somewhen next week. And also thanks to  Redwing for  designing the coverall beautifully.

I heard the new building is open today. It better be true. Can’t wait to see it, step on it, study in it or maybe sleep in it. Some say this building is for marine engineering department only but some other courses claim that they are too. What a pozer. But what do they say, sharing is caring. I don’t know if this is true or not, I heard the new building has a library, a canteen and some say swimming pool? What the heck? But what I do believe is, it has elevator(s) and FULLY WIFI-ED!!! Meaning internet networks are available. How exciting! Nowadays, internet is very important. Like very important. It’s like  a source of life. To my life, it is. Why?
Because most of my assignments requires internet connection. How? Because this is college. Welcome to college life. Where spoon feeding is never exist. Which is good for us. We can’t rely at the teacher all the time. Because at work, the teachers won’t be there for us. We must know what we’re learning and why. How does it apply to our work? One of my subjects that I learnt this week is Mechanical Science. Remember my last post? Yeah, it’s still is. Turns out it is that confusing when you understand it. Just make sure you familiarize with the formula. Here I give you what I learnt this week:-

Torsion of a shaft

Shear Strain at outer fibre = P1 P2/ LSince P1 to P2 is the length of arc, let’s replace the formula of length of arc at P1 P2 = theta x radius (r)So, shear strain at outer fibre = theta x radius / LNext is Modulus of Rigidity (G)G = Shear Stress (T) / Shear Strain
G = T / theta x r / L
G = TL / theta x r
Move T as a subject to get Shear Strain
T = (G)(Theta)(r) / L

Stress on this ring = (G)(Theta)(r) / LTotal load = Stress x AreaTherefore,  Load on one strip = (G)(Theta)(r) x a / LMoment of the Resistance of Ring = (G)(Theta)(r)2(a) / LG, Theta and L are constant. r and a are not constant depends on the strip.Total Moment of Resistance = (G)(Theta) E (a)(r)2 / L
E (a)(r)2 is called Polar Second Moment. Let’s make this to J
Therefore, T = (G)(Theta) x J / L or                     T / J = (G)(Theta) / L

By combing the above equation with the Shear Stress equation, it gives the Fundamental Torsion Equation:-

            T / J = T / r = (G)(Theta) / L

The funny thing is, the whole red text above is not to be memorize. All you have to do familiarize is the Fundamental Torsion Equation. But why is it stated? Because to show how they are related to each other. How they can be apply to each other. It took me time to understand it. Very long time. I felt like dying when I’m lost but I didn’t. I made it. All I did was relaxing my mind, have fun before doing it, encounter less distraction. It took me many tries to finish the exercises. But I managed.

MKJB Marine Engineering Student

What is marine engineering?

Marine engineering refers to the engineering of boats, ships, oil rigs and any other marine vessels.

Why marine engineering?

Because marine engineering consists all engineering such as Mechanical, Electrical and etc. So basically I chose to study more than a single engineering subject.

Marine engineering course consist of 13 subjects:-
  • Language and communication - it is like an english subject but we study how to use it to communicate, how to describe an item/tool. It is important for presentation.
  • General Engineering Knowledge - an engineering subject. We study the basic engineering operations such as how steering the ship works.
  • Workshop Theory & Engineering Materials - we study and identify workshop tools, operations, safety and regulations.
  • Mathematics - By reading the subject I guess you already know what it is. Still don't get the idea? MATHS! It is very important in engineering.
  • Industrial Gas Turbine - We study how the turbine works. It is important because without turbine, engine won't work.
  • I.T Application - It is like a computer studies. But we how to present and talk about our presentation and how to use the internet. It is useful for us to present new products and projects.
  • Mechanical Science - Ever studied Additional Maths? Most likely that's it. But more confusing I guess.  This is a very important subject for engineering.
  • Engineering Drawing - It is basically an art subject but we draw engineering objects using the appropriate tools and instrument.
  • Electrical Technology - An electrical subject. We study the basic, calculation, safety and regulation.
  • Workshop Practice - a physical subject where learn how to use tools and how to make safe edges, wielding, wire edge and etc.
  • Melayu Islam Beraja - The study of our country, our culture, our history. Without M.I.B, we won't be able to know ourselves.
  • Ugama - A religious subject to lead us to the right path.

LAST WEEK'S ACTIVITY

Discipline Talk on Wednesday

29th September 2012

Took place at the MKJB multi-purpose hall, where we, marine engineering students placed at the right end of the hall. Since we, marine engineering students the last group enters the hall, we had to squeeze ourselves together. We are 3 groups together. I'm from group B.

Our discipline teacher talked about 10 things but I only heard 5 of them cause we sat REALLY close to the speaker. My eardrums broke down after number 5.

1. Parking issue

Most of students at MKJB are above 18, which means most of us are licensed driver (exclude me. I'm 18 this October). Our discipline teacher (excuse me for forgetting her name), talked about the MKJB parking spaces. Since the MKJB is covered most of licensed students, they mostly parked their cars at the teachers parking lot. Hence, she asked kindly from the students who parked their cars at the space mentioned. I don't really blame the students for it cause Belait District is an industrial district, where big companies located. So parking spaces at MKJB is small for most students who driven their cars here. I don't where I'll park my car when I'm licensed.

2. Dating

As a teenager, love is common for us. But can we handle it? To be honest, I can't answer my own question cause I'm not really experience at it. Yet. She said she saw students cuddling and what so ever in the college area and advised them not to. Because if the minister of education or anyone who sees it can ruin the good name of the college. I really respect for those couples who manage to avoid dirty things while they were together and success'till marriage. Salute!

3. Attendance

Another issue she talks about is students' attendance. She said some of the students didn't present more than 4 days in a month which leads to ZERO allowance. I don't know how they can live with that. But it is not the allowances that we're chasing, it is the subject. For me, one day skipping the lessons can lead to failure. Trust me, I've been there.

4. Smoking

Smoking in a public area is very restricted especially school and college. Like I mentioned above, most of MKJB's students are above 18 which means they're legal to smoke. Not me. I'm not 18 yet. But I smoked before, so I understand for those who really have a hard time to quit. But hey, if I can, you can. All you have to do is try. Goodluck

5. School Attire

MKJB is a college not a school. So we as a college students are allowed to wear casual clothing BUT must be smart attire with collar. But not polo. It is not consider as a college uniform. And T-shirts are not allowed except during ECA. T-shirts during workshop are highly restricted cause if anything happen, the insurance will not be responsible. I hope our coveralls are provided this Monday.

Thanks for reading my blog. I hope to hear feedback from you. I know this is out of topic but I present you this video from my band. This is a performance from us during school graduation in SMPAP last year. Enjoy and review!
